TUGYAN CENGIC

Tugyan Cengic (b. 1998) is a contemporary artist of Turkish descent, currently based in Berlin, Germany.
He spent his formative years in Abuja, Nigeria, where his early engagement with art began.
Despite not pursuing formal artistic training, Tugyan is entirely self-taught, developing his practice through independent exploration and experimentation.
Alongside his academic studies in economics at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, he established himself as an emerging artist by independently marketing and selling his works.
Early recognition of his practice encouraged him to pursue art full-time upon completion of his degree. Today, Tugyan is dedicated exclusively to his professional artistic career, continuing to expand his body of work and presence within the contemporary art scene.
His first public exhibition was presented by Frankfurter Kunstverein 2021.
Since then he exhibited in Stroke Art Fair, Munich, 2021, independently organized exhibitions and vernissages in Amsterdam, Mainz, Frankfurt & Berlin
Currently Tugyan Cengic is engaged in the creation of the cover, as well as, original illustrations for a forthcoming special collector’s edition of a book that has reached the No. 1 position on the Spiegel bestseller list. While the title of the work cannot yet be disclosed, the edition is scheduled for nationwide release in Germany in early 2026.
In addition, he is collaborating with the company Asphaltgold on a joint exhibition project in Frankfurt am Main, further expanding the dialogue between contemporary art and urban culture

For Tugyan Cengic, authenticity is increasingly elusive in a world saturated with external impressions that constantly shape and challenge personal identity.
What does it do to us if sensual experiences are no longer primarily based on our own experiences, encounters and emotions?
The answer could be:
if you want to get to know yourself, you might as well invent yourself.
But not for Tugyan.
For him, getting to know yourself means getting to the source of something essential and original that may defy external expectations and projections.
Like an archaeologist, he searches for the original sensory experience amidst the filtered and fragmented memories.
An abrupt change of location with no possibility of return at the age of 16 has sensitized him to what it means to suddenly only be able to fall back on memories.
As a child of our time and especially in his role as an influencer, Tugyan is aware of the torrential flood of images and information that can blur memories and even tear out their roots altogether.
Tracing these roots, entrusting himself to them and resisting the compulsion to understand every detail seems to be the source of the calm, strength and mysterious beauty of his paintings.
Painting thus becomes for him a process of re-remembering: less an act of inventing new images than of uncovering of what was already present but almost forgotten beneath the layers of external voices.
