INK IN UTMOST EXPRESSION

INK IN UTMOST EXPRESSION

Jacques Gassmann

SOLO SHOW

September 20, 2024 to November 20, 2024

ARTBASE Wiesbaden

Since the early 1980s, Jacques Gassmann, born in 1963, has worked almost exclusively with writing ink and drawing ink, the oldest writing and painting fluids in the world.

Known since at least 1,000 BC, drawing ink differs from the writing ink used in earlier times primarily through the use of pigments and the addition of binding agents.

Writing ink is a colouring agent dissolved in water - pigments are no longer contained in ink. As a result, writing ink appears more transparent than drawing ink when dry.

In his consistent use of drawing ink and writing ink on paper, cardboard and canvas, Jacques Gassmann succeeds in expressing the existence of man and his surroundings, space, landscape, animals and plants spontaneously and individually, like a snapshot and captivatingly timeless, in the absolute realm of abstraction and the highest expression of figuration.

From the combination of the physicality of drawing ink and the incredible transparency and lustre of writing ink, he developed into a master of an unmistakable, unsettling, figurative and seductive formal language.

Through experiments with writing ink, drawing ink and hydrography, he developed his patented painting technique "Ogrody" in 1990.

We are showing a selection of large and small formats from various thematic cycles from his previous creative periods.

Jacques Gassmann was born in Heidelberg, Germany, and spent his school years in Strasbourg, France, and Langenhagen, Germany. After graduating from high school in 1982, he began working as a freelance artist.

He currently works alternately in Berlin and Würzburg.

Numerous commissioned works in public spaces, solo exhibitions and participations in exhibitions in galleries, art fairs, art halls and museums have taken him to Germany, China, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and the USA.

His works can be found in museums, important private collections and public spaces such as Würzburg Cathedral and the Augustinian Church in Würzburg.
